DoT’s Transport Insights branch develops strategic, evidence-based insights and shares practical advice in view of emerging trends, challenges and opportunities impacting the WA transport system. We collaborate across the Transport Portfolio, with other agencies, and wider industry to explore themes and topics important for our state’s transport future.
Strategic Transport Modelling
Our strategic modelling tools, including the Strategic Transport Evaluation Model (STEM), are used to support planning and development of urban transport in Perth and Peel. The Strategic Transport Modelling team maintains, continually develops and uses these modelling tools to support our partners’ activities.
This team:
- Partners with Main Roads WA to develop the Perth Transport Model.
- Develops new and improved modelling capabilities.
- Provides modelling services for strategic land use planning and transport infrastructure planning projects, and business cases.
- Provides advice on transport planning and modelling, strategy and policy, and economic evaluation.
- Collects travel survey and transport planning data.
Strategic transport modelling has been applied to various projects and programs, including:
- Long-term strategic transport plans such as Perth and Peel @3.5 million and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage Directions 2031 guidance.
- Business case modelling to guide decision-making on major transport infrastructure investment such as METRONET, Smart Freeways, and active mode and ferry projects.
- Land use and transport planning and modelling for major development proposals.
Transport Research and Foresight
The Transport Research and Foresight team uses its strategic expertise to deliver thoughtful, objective analysis and advice. Focusing on outcomes aligned to Government priorities, the team collaborates across the Portfolio, other agencies and external partners, to understand and address the changing needs of the WA community.
This team:
- Investigates and evaluates emerging trends, challenges and opportunities affecting transport in WA.
- Prepares recommendations and advice to influence innovative and sustainable transport strategies, policies and programs.
- Undertakes strategic research and analysis and contributes expertise on strategic projects in collaboration with other business units and agencies.
Recent focus areas include:
- Leading exploratory work looking at different possible futures for Perth and Peel and how the transport system operates under these different conditions.
- Supporting development of the Sectoral Emissions Reduction Strategy.
- Collaborating with Transport Portfolio partners and other agencies to encourage responsible use of eRideable devices as part of a sustainable mobility mix.
Transport Analytics and Geographic Information Systems
Access to high quality data, analytics, mapping and visualisations aids effective and efficient decision-making by teams within DoT.
We work with many partners within and outside of DoT including:
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialists in DoT’s Maritime area and Westport.
- State government agencies including Main Roads WA, the Public Transport Authority, Landgate and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.
- Local governments.
This team:
- Builds, maintains and enhances Urban Mobility’s GIS capabilities.
- Uses business intelligence software to analyse and visualise data.
- Captures and maintains custodial spatial datasets including for the Long-Term Cycle Network (LTCN) and Perth Parking Management.
- Produces cartographic products (e.g. maps, charts) to support engagement and help share information with partners and the community.
Transport analytics and GIS provides value to many projects and programs, including:
- Integrating land use and transport planning data to support strategic and statutory planning activities from local to state-wide scales.
- Assisting in visualising and analysing data relating to the Perth Parking Management Act.
- Analysing and visualising active transport network data, enabling better infrastructure decision-making and helping to measure and share progress of program delivery.
- Integrating with strategic transport modelling outputs to enhance insights.
