Marine pilot exemption certificate

Vessels of 35 metres or greater must engage a licensed marine pilot while transiting through port waters.

To be eligible to apply for a marine pilot exemption, you must:

  • be a permanent resident of Australia
  • have completed at least 3 inbound and 3 outbound transits through the relevant pilotage area
  • undertake and successfully complete a local knowledge exam.

Apply for a pilot exemption certificate

To apply for a marine pilot exemption certification, you must submit:

  • completed marine pilot exemption certificate application form (below)
  • 2 passport size photographs
  • certified copy of your certificate of competency
  • certified copy of your passport or visa
  • completed Log Book form with details of trips/voyages in the pilotage area  
  • current health certificate.

You must also pay a fee.

Allow at least 2 weeks for processing of your application.

Applicants meeting all the requirements will be issued a pilot exemption certificate.

You must operate within the conditions specified on your marine pilot exemption certificate.

Change of conditions

If you require a change to the conditions of your marine pilot exemption certificate, you will need to submit an application for change of conditions form below.

Allow at least 2 weeks for processing of your application.
